One of the things we’ve been doing here at All Nations is looking at personality types and patterns of reaction. We’ve done a Myers–Briggs session and, although I hate the idea of defining people by four letters, or even 16 letters, I’ve found it has given me a lot of insight into my personality that I hadn’t thought of before. Opportunity
So, we’ve had the first two weeks of our course at All Nations now, and we’re starting to get a feel for how this year might go.
The thing that’s a little overwhelming for me personally is the sheer amount of opportunities for all kinds of things.
There’s the academic study, the basis of the course. I can see already that we will only scratch the surface of so many fascinating and important subjects. This is part of the aim of the course, to open up our eyes to what a wonderful God we have and a wonderful world and people that he has created. I could easily fill up all my non-lecture time with reading theology books and discussing big, important themes with some of the amazing people studying here.

Frantic
Right now it’s a bit of a crazy time. Nothing really bad is happening – in fact, loads of good stuff is happening. So don’t let me complain too loudly! What’s hard is setting priorities.
Farrah, Zachariah and I are going to college in September (yes, next month!) and we have a lot to do before then. We were hoping to focus this summer on building friendships and partnerships, ready for our big move to China next year. But it’s turned out that the thing that eats away our time is getting the house ready for renting. This is a practical, non-relational thing that has to be done, but I feel like we’re missing out on some important time that we could be spending with people. People are much more important than things.

What am I afraid of?
I heard an interesting talk today at church about fear. We often think we are scared of objects, like spiders, snakes, water, heights (slightly abstract object)… What we really fear is the effect they have on us. The fear of spiders comes from imagining some harm they could do to our bodies, etc.
Failure is a big fear, and it comes down to the fear of our personhood being worthless. To counter that I need to remember that my worth comes from God and his sacrifice for me, not from my successes and failures.
