Auto-dark mode in WordPress

I’ve spent most of today moving my website to a new host, and while I was doing it I wanted to add a dark mode.

It took quite a lot of fiddling around, but now I’ve got the site to automatically switch between light and dark mode based on the OS mode. I use macOS, and it automatically switches to dark mode at night-time. Now my website switches along with it!

New website

It’s time for another new website! I hope you like the new look.

The move was kind of forced on me, as Tumblr is no longer working in China, so my old website (which relied a lot on Tumblr’s servers) was looking rather sad. Starting my new job, I’ve been linking to my website from a number of professional sites, so I wanted it to work properly again.

I’ve moved from Tumblr to WordPress, and I’m very pleased with the new look. There are sure to be a few teething problems, but overall it’s been quite a smooth migration process. There are a few headaches with images embedded in the blog posts though.

Take a look around and let me know what you think!

Alternatives to Flickr

Since moving to China, I’ve had to move a lot of my internet around:

Now I’m looking for a home for my photos.

My ideal is the iCloud Photo Library: all my photos online, seamlessly available to stream to iPhone, iPad and Mac, and all backed up. This is exactly what I want. At the moment I’m trying to get it for free—as my photo library is over 50GB I would have to give Apple some money each month to look after my photos for me. I may end up having to pay as I haven’t found a viable alternative…

In the UK, I was using Flickr. This is great because it has the automatic backup, it has 1TB free storage, and has very nice sharing features. Sadly it’s not available in China.

I’ve just spent some time looking into 500px and Photobucket. Both look pretty good, but the free accounts only have 1GB and 2GB of storage, respectively.

So here’s my question: is there anything as good as Flickr, or better, in China, for free? My guess is: no.

Whirlwind

Ten days ago I was feeling happy and fat after Christmas, but I had no idea what I would be doing for the immediate future. Since then so much has happened it feels like I have been picked up in a whirlwind! It’s so amazing to look back on what has happened and see how God has been leading me through.
